For Christmas and your child

Give Your Children The Best Gift of All – YOU

December 22, 2007 on 9:55 am | In Children, Toys, Gifts EMail This Post

We
live in a time where millions of children spend all day away from their
families in facilities that have big screen TVs to amuse them, and they
have caregivers for whom English is not required.  This is also the
time when parents buy ever-increasing numbers of electronic gizmos to
occupy their children’s time - sometimes to “make them smarter,” or to
“make them buzz off,” so that busy, busy parents can have some
“well-earned down time.”

Whether its TV, computer games, or hand-held devices,
more and more parents are inundating even babies with all of this
mass-produced “input.”  A recent study reported that about 40% of
families with babies and young children keep the television on at all
times.  “Always on” TV damages the children’s ability to play
imaginatively and to develop language skills.  Obviously, it reduces
the number of nurturing interactions between parents and children, too.

There are many so-called studies which identify
programs that provide a positive influence (like “Barney,” which
teaches kids politeness and social cooperation).  The problem with all
of these studies is that they never compare these TV-watching children
to those raised in TV-free households to compare the shows to the
loving attention of a parent.

The problem is that we are living in a time of rising
juvenile obesity and inactivity, and ever-increasing “diagnoses” of ADD
and ADHD (which I believe most of the time is “kids being kids,” and/or
kids who don’t get proper attention paid to them, with direction,
support, and consequences).  This is also a time of more childhood
sexual activity, leading to STDs, pregnancies, abortions and broken
hearts with confused minds.

So, this Christmas-time, change your adult life
around and give your children “stuff to do” — some with you and some on
their own - to exercise their imaginations and give them a sense of
accomplishment.

They are kicking us out because we destroy the scenery - so what do these do to it?

A warm, rugged place to sleep on Mount Hood

Cabins - Skiers and snowshoers will be able to use the huts
for overnight stays
Thursday, November 08,
2007
JOE FITZGIBBON

The Oregonian

Skiing or snowshoeing into some of Mount Hood’s most
scenic winter terrain can be grueling, if not downright
impossible. It’s getting easier, though, thanks to a
brainstorm by two outdoor enthusiasts.

Don Bain, 40, of Beaverton and James Koski, 40, of
Washington, D.C., are longtime friends who thrive on hiking,
skiing and mountain biking. Inspired by a Colorado project
they visited two years ago, they persuaded the U.S. Forest
Service to allow them to construct and furnish three small
sleeping cabins, called Cascade Huts, along lightly traveled
trails on the mountain.

“One of the discouraging aspects about going into
remote areas most winters is that you’ve got nowhere to
warm up if you get chilled, and you certainly can’t
stay overnight unless you want to build a snow cave,”
Koski said. “We think these huts will provide great
opportunities for people to have a totally new
experience.”

Each wooden building is about the size of a double-wide
trailer. Each sleeps eight people and is furnished with
water, nonperishable food, sleeping bags, propane heaters, a
stove and a first-aid kit. Each has windows and a small
porch.

“When you wake up and look out your window, and the
only tracks in the snow you can see are those of
animals,” Bain said, “you feel like you are in an
oasis.”

But finding the ideal location remains a challenge, the men
said.

“We plan to place them where they aren’t easily
accessible, especially by car, but not so far off the beaten
path that you’d have trouble finding them,” Bain
said.

This past summer, Bain moved the three huts by truck to
clearly marked mountain-biking trails. This winter, he plans
to set them up on the southeast side of Mount Hood in the
snow-blanketed White River and historic Barlow Road areas.

None will be in protected wilderness, he said. Guided by
maps, skiers and snowshoers will access the sites from
sno-parks along U.S. 26 and Oregon 35.

Eighteen months before launching the project, the
entrepreneurs scouted locations on the mountain, discussed
their idea with skiers, hikers and mountain guides and met
with state and federal officials.

Support has been enthusiastic all along the way, Koski said.
“People who want to use the huts say that they like the
idea of flexibility and independence when they go out,”
Koski said, “and that’s what we wanted to
provide.”

Doug Jones, permit specialist with the U.S. Forest Service,
said that similar programs in Utah and Colorado have proven
popular with tourists. “It’s working well
there,” he said. “We want them to succeed because
they are providing services that we can’t.”

The Forest Service will receive about 3 percent of the
rental fees, which range from $40 a night for an individual
and $125 for a group. In return, the agency will monitor
activities around the sites.

“We plan to take a look at them annually and make sure
that the setup makes sense environmentally,” Jones
said.

Among the first visitors to the huts when they were launched
this summer were mountain bikers on multi-day rides.

Chris Koch, 41, and his wife, Krista, 36, of Bellingham,
Wash., stayed in the huts with several friends. He called
the trek one of the most memorable of their lives.

“We saw a pioneer woman’s grave and some pretty
spectacular scenery,” Koch said. “The huts had
just about everything you needed, including some wonderful
journal entries and recipes left by people who came through
before us.”

George W.
Bush High School?

Look at Reagan

By Daniel Muniz

A reader had once asked John Hawkins of Right Wing News for his
opinion about George W. Bush’s dismal approval ratings. Hawkins
assured his readers that some day your children will attend a George
W. Bush high school. Seeing how the media and popular culture depict
the president, such a claim may indeed seem outlandish but only if
you do not put history into context and into its proper perspective.

When
I was a teenager during the entire Reagan administration I
vividly remembered the incendiary inflammatory diatribes hurled
against the president. Popular culture created malicious caricatures
of Reagan that were not unlike the ones about George W. Bush that we
commonly see today. And at the time where I was living at, Texas was
not yet the solid Republican state as it is today, thus it was not
uncommon for certain center-right voters to rile against the Gipper.

During my teenage days, I felt (along with the media and the rest of the
popular culture) that it was absolutely insane and downright
dangerous for Reagan to not only be too confrontational with the
Soviet Union but to also be so provocative with them during his
massive
defense buildup. I had read quite a bit of literature that was
popular at the time, such as the
“Nuclear Winter” and I had seen the “The Day After” (for young people of
today that was a movie, not a pill) and Amerika.

Nuclear war with the Russians may seem so antiquated in the
millennium but back in the eighties (as it was in the decades
before), that was quite a possibility during the Cold War. And it
was natural for many people (myself included) to want to avoid our
own annihilation although others simply wished it away with naïve
peace plans.

Reagan was different.

Not only did he boldly seek to confront the Soviet Union, but he
also sought to defeat them. Even among Republicans, very few people
at the time really thought that the Cold War was actually winnable
by the United States as evidenced by the failures of administration
after administration.

The thought of provoking the Soviets terrified liberals and the
media amplified much of that hysteria throughout the airwaves. The
press immortalized Reagan’s famous depiction of the USSR as “The
Evil Empire.”
The media incessantly trashed and pummeled him for
that comment. And Hollywood caricatured him as either a warmonger or
as being stupid and out of touch with reality, which is not much
different than how the left wing today paints George W. Bush.

Yet Reagan and the conservatives of his Reagan Revolution were
steadfast with the profound vision of toppling the Soviet Union. I,
along with quite a few other people at the time had our doubts and
misgivings.

After his presidency, the Soviet Union did collapse. The USSR
disintegrated and a slew of new nations embarked on their own
destinies. Communism itself also failed and it was no longer
touted as a way of life that we must co-exist alongside with.

Today, Reagan’s other famous phrase has been immortalized:

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

It has taken history quite a bit of time to catch up with the
enormous ramifications of the ending of the Cold War. During the
Clinton administration, Reagan was still looked upon unkindly with
scorn and ridicule. It wasn’t until his passing that even many left
wing politicians began to grudgingly admit to his role in defeating
communism and bringing down the Soviet Union. And as more of the
fruits of his legacy come to light, the more history will begin to
take a “kinder gentler” approach at his contributions and
endeavors.

Overall, the media was wrong. Hollywood was wrong. I was wrong. And
so were quite a few others who were wrong about Reagan and his
vision to put an end to communism and the Red threat.

Fragments of the Berlin Wall now sit in museums. There is a new
aircraft carrier that bears Reagan’s name. A number of other
landmarks, including an airport, have been named after him.

Incidentally, in the suburb where my new house was been built,
the high school that my children will someday attend is indeed after
Ronald Reagan. As a teenager, I would never have
imagined that such a thing could have even been remotely possible especially
after the way that the press and popular culture treated him.

But now I foresee that the same thing will happen to George W. Bush
although perhaps not in his lifetime.

Much like Reagan and communism, George W. Bush believes that Islamic terrorists
can and will be defeated. It has already happened in Afghanistan and
it is happening in Iraq.

I too had my own misgivings about Iraq especially after the chaos
that ensued shortly after the fall of Baghdad. But this time, I have
been able to see past the sound bites of the media and the filters
of Hollywood that clouded the tremendous achievements that our
troops have accomplished. This
time, I can now see the determination and perseverance of a
president who wants democracy to flourish in a region of the world
where freedom is almost alien. And democracy and freedom will help
extinguish the threat of Islamic terrorism throughout the Middle
East.

Is George W. Bush flawed?

Of course he is; just like every
president is. He has made mistakes and oftentimes he has failed to
assert himself or at the very least, defend his administration. And
a few times he has disappointed members of his own party.

Unfortunately, the left wing, the press, and Hollywood will continue
to scorn Bush, but some day history will look back and realize that
a major terrorist network has been dismantled and its remnants
scattered throughout the world. History will then see electoral
democracies flourishing not only in Iraq and Afghanistan but also in
Lebanon, Egypt, and in much of the Middle East.

In essence, I do believe that John Hawkins of Right Wing News is
correct!

History will vindicate the president. And ironically, my toddler will
someday be attending
the Ronald Reagan high school that is a few miles away from my
neighborhood. And perhaps the children of
my son will some day attend a George W. Bush high school.

Can we fixit?

America’s Bad
Image

Can We Really Improve It?

By Daniel Muniz

According to many polls, much of the world’s population doesn’t
think very highly of the United States including many longtime
allies. Consequently, there are always plenty of national political figures of both
parties who want to polish up this country’s image to the world,
although it is usually done in connection with a campaign promise.

And in every presidential election cycle, there are candidates who
want to pursue this worthless crusade.

But the fatal flaw to this endeavor is that it may not be in
America’s best interest to devote excessive time, money, and
resources to clean up our global reputation because the harsh
reality is that it is not possible to achieve that objective. All
what this rhetoric really accomplishes is to provide good media buzz
during an election season or to raise a political profile. Here are
some of the insurmountable obstacles:

Economics
There are over four billion people who live in countries that are
economically worse off than Mexico. To no surprise, their viewpoint of
what America needs do to clean up its act, especially among the
poor, is far beyond than what this country is capable of doing. To
be frank, much of the world feels that the United States should be
Santa Claus by redistributing its wealth to them even though many
countries are already the recipient of our foreign aid packages.

Furthermore, according to Marxist doctrine, a rich
person is only rich because he or she oppressed someone else in
order to get it. Accordingly, America is a wealthy nation because we
exploited the world and the anti-globalization crowd has been able
to magnify this accusation most acutely for over a decade. In
essence, there really is no practical way to overcome our
financially successful image unless we are indeed willing
redistribute our own wealth to the rest of the impoverished planet
and become destitute.

Of course socialist European nations would very much like to see the
United Sates embrace socialism because they feel that the free
market is the source of the world’s problems. Ironically, there has
been quite a role reversal now that France is considered to be one
of the most socialist oriented countries in the world while China
has become the most free market nation on the planet. Times have
definitely changed over the past several decades.

But what is most tragic about wealth is that the countries that
should already be doing exceedingly well in economic growth are
still mired in abject poverty even though they fully adhere to the
principles of socialism and the racism of Yankee (or gringo) Go
Home. There are many nations that have been blessed with abundant
natural resources like oil such as Mexico, Nigeria, Angola, and
Venezuela. Yet, instead of booming economies their populations are
still bitterly impoverished and their futures are grim.

Global Literacy
Much of the world is illiterate. That may sound like a horrible
assessment but illiteracy greatly limits the ability of critical
thinking and it very much restricts the capacity to obtain credible
news and accurate information about current events and about the
world itself. Inevitably, this leads to ignorance which can easily
by exploited by numerous foreign leaders, political parties, and
radical religious groups. Much of the world hates America but they
really don’t understand the reasons why or are even aware of the
facts other than the perception that we are a bad country.

Ignorance
Ignorance exists even among our allies in Europe and it is
increasingly widespread. Polls reveal that large segments of
Europeans, especially among the youth, believe in all kinds of half-baked
conspiracy theories about America, such as George W. Bush plotting
the destruction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. In
fact, conspiracies about the United States thrive all around the
world and they take on mythic proportions.

Political Correctness
Europe stands in the vanguard of forsaking its own rich heritage and
history along with its common sense and reason because of political
correctness. In fact, everyone can heap the world’s problems on
America while cheerfully embracing their own double standards and
hypocrisy. For example, racism only exists in America while many
countries blatantly practice it on a daily basis. Only Americans
hate illegal aliens while much of the world maintains harsh policies
against illegal immigration. This list of hypocrisy can go on
forever.

American Media
Much of the information that the world gets about the United States
comes directly from our press like the New York Times, The Washington
Post, etc. And since many of these news organizations are blatantly
left wing, they present a much distorted and unbalanced view of
America. Unfortunately, foreign media sources rely on these liberal
news wires.

Force Projection
Perhaps nothing is more alarming than a mighty country having the
ability to insert itself anywhere in the world for an indefinite
period of time. People are rightfully concerned about the rise of
China’s military but they will not have the capabilities of force
projection for at least another 30 years. Sure, China can support
regional conflicts but they cannot impose their will anywhere they
choose.

In all truthfulness, this is a legitimate fear because the United
States does have the most powerful military on the planet and its
capabilities are enormous. Although we can articulate our foreign
policy agenda, our intentions are subject to manipulation due to
ignorance and political correctness.

In summary, improving our image abroad is simply not possible and
there is not much we can do to stop people from hating us because of
the external factors that are beyond our control. All that we can do
as a nation is exercise sound judgment and use common sense when
dealing with the global community. As for making the world like us,
that is a pipe dream.

Veterans, Honor & Dr. Laura

Save The Flag-Folding Recitations at Military Funerals

October 31, 2007 on 1:32 pm | In Military, Veterans EMail This Post

This is a “huzzah” to a bunch of Democrats for doing the right thing, and we have to join them.

A group of Congressmen has asked the Department of Veterans’ Affairs
to reconsider its obnoxious, disgusting, and horrible ban on the
flag-folding ceremony at military funerals, after the agency decided
last month to “streamline” burials at Federal cemeteries.  It gets
worse.

However, the attempt to jerk their heads around in the right
direction is being led by Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC).  He wrote
a letter to the head of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs which said:

Dear Acting Secretary Mansfield:

We are writing to express our concern regarding recently
announced policies banning the traditional flag-folding recitations by
Memorial Honor Detail volunteers.

The flag-folding recitation is a long-standing tradition which
brings comfort to the living and honor to the deceased.  The
recitations accompanying each fold pay tribute to the service and
sacrifice of our veterans and their families, the nation they proudly
serve, and the belief that they hold dear.

As our nation loses 1,500 World War II veterans every day, we
feel that it is vital to insure that the final rites for these American
heroes will be permitted to include the freedoms of speech and
religious expression enshrined in our Constitution, and defended by
their service.

We ask that you please reconsider the policy and allow the
Memorial Honor Detail volunteers to perform the traditional
flag-folding recitation if requested by the family of the deceased…

Now this letter was co-signed, and I want to give kudos to the
representatives who co-signed it, and they’re all Democrats.  Ask me
where the Republicans are on this.  I don’t know - maybe nobody called
them up.  But it’s co-signed by Representative Chris Carney (D-PA),
Brad Ellsworth (D-IN)…and these are all great guys for doing this…Baron
Hill (D-IN), Tim Holden (D-PA), Nick Lampson (D-TX), Jim Marshall
(D-GA), Jim Matheson (D-UT), Mick McIntyre (D-NC), Mike Ross (D-AR),
Gene Taylor (D-MS), and John Tanner (D-TN).

Now I want to give you the second part of the problem, and it’s so
obnoxious, that it’s hard for me to even write.  By the way, there’s
nothing in the Constitution that bans religion.  Our Constitution
disallows the state to have a religion that we all have to follow, but
it doesn’t ban religion.  That is so abused by the atheists trying to
take God out of everything, that I’m tired of it, and we have to fight
back.  This is the moment to fight back, and I’ll give you the address
on how to do it.

A complaint - one, lousy complaint….one! - made this happen.  The complaint about the recitation for the 11th fold, which says “in
the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal
of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God
of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”
garnered a complaint at the California cemetery and prompted the ban.  One lousy comment!

By the way, the 12th fold recitation is geared to Christians, saying “the fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies in their eyes God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.”
It’s just terrible…just terrible, as one World War II Navy veteran,
Bobby Castillo, 85, said:   “It’s a slap in the face to every veteran.
When we got back from the war, we didn’t ask for a whole lot.  We just
want to give our veterans the respect they deserve.  No one has ever
complained about us.  I just don’t understand.”   He is part of a
16-member detail that has performed military honors at more than 1,400
services.  They were preparing to read the flag-folding remarks at the
Riverside (CA) cemetery when graveyard staff stopped them.

Charlie Waters, parliamentarian for the American Legion of
California said he’s advising Memorial Honor Details to ignore the
edict.  “This is nuts,” Walter said.  “There are 26 million veterans in
this country and they’re not going to take us all to prison.”

So, I’m very grateful to Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC), and I
think we have to join in turning this around.  This is disgusting.  You
take a tradition that’s been going on for so long, and because one
person doesn’t want to hear “God,” it stops?  No.  Let’s turn this
around.  Turn this completely around, and this is how you’re going to
do it.

You have to be polite, so send your letters to:

The Honorable Gordon H. Mansfield
Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs
810 Vermont Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC  20420
Phone: 202-273-4817
Email: Gordon.Mansfield@va.gov

Send a letter, make a phone call, and send an email.  I want this
man inundated.  I want millions of you to do this, to counteract one person who thinks they can rip God out of the universe, when our Constitution does not demand that.

All of this information is on my website www.drlaura.com//action/index.html?mode=view&tile=1&id=14918.  I am unbelievably grateful to these dozen Democrats who stood up to the plate immediately.  “Hoo-ah” to all of them!

UPDATE

We spoke to Congressman Shuler’s office and they’re still going
forward with legislation to rescind this order.  While the
“clarification” from the Department of Veterans Affairs only covers
volunteer honor guards, many of the cemeteries have Federal employees
performing the flag-folding.

In addition, we heard from a soldier currently serving on a state
Honor Guard, who told us that they often work in co-operation with
local Veterans Service Organizations’ honor guards.  The Veterans
Service Organizations not only donate their time, but they have to
maintain their uniforms, pay for gas to get to the funerals, pay for
blank ammunition and weapon servicing.  They’re supposed to be paid a
small amount for their services, but while Congress has authorized the
program to do this, they haven’t actually funded it.  We need to do a
lot more to honor our veterans, both living and deceased.

24 years on - The man who saved millions of lives

In September 1983 the world was closer to doomsday than it ever was…
24 years on - The man who saved millions of lives
Sat, 22 September 2007
The date is 1 September 1983
and the Cold War between the Soviet Union and USA is in full gear, when
from the New York skies Korean Air Lines Flight 007 flies from JFK,
destination Seoul, South Korea.

In the middle of the flight, while accidently passing through Soviet
air space, Soviet fighter jets appear getting close the aircraft. The
Soviets, who didn’t know the plane contained civilians, warned the
pilot that they will shoot down the aircraft if it doesn’t identify
itself, and the pilot, for some unknown reason, doesn’t respond.

Reports say the pilot never actually received the information, although
theories about this are still unclear. An hour passes as the fighter
jets still accompany the aircraft, and the orders from Soviet military
is to shoot down the aircraft just as the plane was leaving Soviet
airspace.

The Soviet fighter jets shot down the plane, with the aircraft plunging
35,000 feet in less than 90 seconds, killing 269 civilians, including a
US congressman.

Hell broke loose. As the Soviets tried to defend their ‘mistake’, US
President Ronald Raegan described the Soviets actions as “barbaric” and
“a crime against humanity that must never be forgotten”.

The tension between the two mega-powers hit an all-time high, and on 15
September 1983 the US administration banned Soviet aircrafts from
operating in US airspace. With the political climate in dangerous
territory, both US and Soviet government were on high-alert believing
an attack was imminent.

It was a cold night at the Serpukhov-15 bunker in Moscow on 26 September 1983
as Strategic Rocket Forces lieutenant colonel Stanislav Yevgrafovich
Petrov resumed his duty, monitoring the skies of the Soviet Union,
after taking a shift of someone else who couldn’t go to work.

Just past midnight, Petrov received a computer report he’d dreaded all
his military career to see, the computer captured a nuclear military
missile being launched from the US, destination Moscow.

In the event of such an attack, the Soviet Union’s strategy protocol
was to to launch an immediate all-out nuclear weapons counterattack
against the United States with nuclear power, and immediately
afterwards inform top political and military figures. From there, it
would be taken a decision to further the military offensive on America.

Stanislav Petrov

The bunker was in full-alarm, with red lights
all over the place as the missile was captured by the Soviet satellites
via computers. Petrov wasn’t convinced though. He believed that if the
US attacked, they would have attacked all-out, not just sending one
missile and giving a chance for them (the Soviets) to attack back.

Petrov figured something didn’t make sense, as strategically, just one
missile from the US would be a strategic disaster. He took some time to
think and decided not to give the order a nuclear attack against
America, since in his opinion, one missile didn’t make sense
strategically and it could easily have been a computer error.

But then, seconds later, the situation turned extremely serious. A
second missile was spotted by the satellite. The pressure by the
officers in the bunker to commence responsive actions against America
started growing. A third missile was spotted, followed by a fourth. A
couple of seconds later, a fifth one was spotted… everyone in the
bunker was agitated as the USSR was under missile attack.

He had two options. Go with his instinct and dismiss the missiles as
computer errors, breaking military protocol in the process or take
responsive action and commence full-blown nuclear actions against
America, potentially killing millions.

He decided it was a computer error, knowing deep down that if he was wrong, missiles would be raining down in Moscow in minutes.

Seconds turned to minutes, and as time passed it was clear Petrov was
right, it was a computer error after all. Stanislav Petrov had
prevented a worldwide nuclear war, a doomsday scenario that would have
annihilated entire cities. He was a hero. Those around him
congratulated him for his superb judgment.

Upon further investigation it resulted that the error came from a very
rare sunlight alignment, which the computer read as missile.

Of course, top brass in the Kremlin didn’t find it so heroic, as he
broke military protocol and if he would have been wrong, risked
millions of Russian lives. He was sent into early retirement, with a
measly $200 a month pension, suffering a nervous breakdown in the
process.

Due to military secrecy, nobody knew Petrov’s heroic judgment until
1998, when a book written by a Russian officer present at the bunker
revealed that World War 3 was closer than people thought, and a nuclear
holocaust was avoided by a close shave.

Petrov reminisces what could have been if he didn’t get that extra shift that night

Even though the Russian have little sympathy to the man who saved
millions of American lives, the United Nations and a number of US
agencies honoured the man who could have started a nuclear war, but
didn’t.

In 2008, a documentary film entitled ‘The Man who saved the World’ is
set to be released, perhaps giving Petrov some financial help, thanking
him for the incredible part he had in keeping the US and the USSR out
of a full-blown war.

Without knowing on the cold Moscow night back in 1983, a badly paid 44
year old military officer saved the world, and made himself one of the
most influential persons of the century in the process, saving more
lives than anyone ever did.

Most of today’s people don’t know it, but today’s world as we know it, is like it is because of Stanislav Petrov.
